The first steps in the Papier Mâché process...

It has taken Te Kinga students 3 weeks to make the shells for their animal masks. We have also been learning about the history of Papier Mâché and looking at artists who use it to make amazing sculptures and models for movies/television.
We started with balloon templates

A very 'hands-on' process!

We used drawings and plasticine to make
3D models of what we want our masks to look like.

As this process takes a LONG TIME we'll update our progress in a few weeks!

Our 'Name-Tunes'... can you create one of your own?!

 Learning in, through and about

'The Arts' Term 3, 2021

Te Kinga have started the Term by launching into a variety of learning activities that will help us develop our skills and knowledge about The Arts (dance, drama, visual arts and music).

In Literacy we have been learning about the classical composer - Beethoven. The students were surprised that some tunes they were familiar with, were written a such a long time ago. They also found it interesting that Beethoven was still able to compose music despite having a hearing impairment for much of his adult life. Here are some links to the music of Beethoven...enjoy!

Te Kinga has a big performing arts focus for the end of term - Te Hui Ahurei o Ngā Kura o Te Tai o Poutini - the annual West Coast Schools Kapa Haka Festival at Hokitika! We loved taking part last year and hope to do equally as well in 2021! We'll keep you updated about this...

More traditional dance forms... check out our Snowball Waltz! We're pretty squashed in our classroom (without having the hall at the moment) AND we have improved since the hilarious video was taken... it is great to have a challenge every now and then!
